Fils de Yitzhak et petit-fils de Vidal Iᵉʳ, tous éminents à Fès. Le Hida le comptait parmi « les génies de l'Occident ». Savant encyclopédique (citant philosophes grecs, arabes et rabbiniques) et médecin, il laissa d'importants commentaires bibliques et midrashiques. Une partie de ses écrits demeure manuscrite.
