描述
In certain prosperous Italian synagogues, the holy ark was not made of wood but carved from marble, in the manner of Renaissance and baroque portals and altars. Framed by polychrome marble columns and a sculpted pediment, sometimes topped by the Tablets of the Law, it houses the scrolls behind ornate doors and bears a dedicatory inscription.
