L'un des premiers rebbes hassidiques, disciple de Shlomo de Karlin. Sa manière extatique de prier lui valut le surnom de « ha-Saraf » (le séraphin). Opposé aux faiseurs de miracles, il exigeait de ses hassidim la perfection éthique et le renoncement à l'appât du gain, vivant lui-même dans une pauvreté extrême.
