Né à Craiova (Roumanie) dans une famille juive, formé à Vienne, altiste. Fuyant l'Autriche en 1939, il s'établit à Sydney. En 1945 il fonde Musica Viva Australia, qui devint la plus grande organisation de musique de chambre au monde. Il co-inventa aussi un modèle de fermeture éclair résistante utilisée pour les parachutes durant la guerre.
