Frères d'origine allemande (Francfort) établis à Paris, banquiers, ils constituèrent à la fin du XIXe siècle deux des plus importantes collections d'art de France (peinture hollandaise du XVIIe s. : Rembrandt, Van Dyck, ainsi que primitifs italiens et flamands). La fortune de Rodolphe provint notamment de l'extraction de diamants et d'or en Afrique du Sud. Leurs collections furent dispersées après leur mort (marchand Duveen).
