Dernier grand chef de la yeshiva palestinienne (gaonat) transférée à Fustat, il portait le titre de Ra'is al-Yahud (chef des Juifs) au moins de 1127 jusqu'à sa mort. Fils du Gaon Solomon ben Elijah ha-Kohen, il appartenait à la famille sacerdotale qui dirigeait le gaonat depuis le milieu du XIe siècle. Il aurait été assassiné en 1139 lors des persécutions du vizir Ridwan ibn Walakhshi ; après sa mort, le gaonat se scinda entre Damas et Fustat.
