Comte, fils de Meyer Joseph Cahen d'Anvers (fondateur de la banque Cahen d'Anvers) et de Clara Bischoffsheim, il dirige les affaires bancaires familiales. Grand mécène, il commande des portraits à Renoir (dont « Rose et Bleu », ses filles Alice et Elisabeth, 1881), Bonnat et Carolus-Duran, et acquiert en 1895 le château de Champs-sur-Marne qu'il fait restaurer.
