Formé à l'Institut rabbinique de Padoue (ordonné en 1832), il fut grand-rabbin de Turin de 1833 à sa mort en 1857. Il guida les Juifs de Turin dans la revendication de leurs droits civils et, après l'émancipation dans le royaume de Sardaigne (1848), publia un projet de réorganisation du culte. Le gouvernement lui confia à plusieurs reprises la rédaction de statuts concernant les communautés juives.
