Né à Belfort (fils du rabbin de la ville), ordonné rabbin en 1867. Rabbin à Paris (temple de la rue Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth, succédant à Zadoc Kahn), aumônier militaire pendant la guerre de 1870, professeur de Talmud, il dirigea le Séminaire israélite de France de 1890 à sa mort en 1917. Ses positions favorisaient une lecture libérale visant l'intégration sociale ; il collabora à la Revue des études juives.
