Marrane né à Lisbonne, fils d'Abraham Athias (brûlé par l'Inquisition à Cordoue en 1667). Installé à Amsterdam vers 1654, il y fonda une imprimerie hébraïque d'où sortirent quelque 450 ouvrages, dont la fameuse édition du Mishné Torah de Maïmonide (Yad ha-Hazaka) avec le Lehem Mishné (5 vol., 1702-3), achevée par son fils Emanuel, et des Bibles hébraïques réputées.
