Grand prêtre de la maison de Phiabi. Selon Flavius Josèphe, il fit partie de la délégation envoyée à Rome dans l'affaire du mur du Temple sous Agrippa II. La littérature rabbinique conserve une critique célèbre des grands prêtres de sa maison (« Malheur à moi à cause de la maison d'Ishmael ben Phiabi… »).
