Né en 1605 dans une famille de marranes portugais installée à Amsterdam vers 1612, il étudia auprès du hakham Isaac Uziel et fut confirmé en 1638 comme l'un des quatre hakhamim de la congrégation Talmud Torah d'Amsterdam. En 1641/42 il accepta le poste de hakham de la communauté juive de Recife (Brésil néerlandais), devenant le premier rabbin des Amériques, jusqu'à la reconquête portugaise de 1654 où il regagna Amsterdam.
