Marrane portugais, Duarte de Paz servit d'abord le roi Jean III (décoré de l'ordre du Christ après avoir perdu un œil à la guerre d'Afrique), puis agit à Rome comme premier procureur des Nouveaux-Chrétiens portugais. Il obtint de Clément VII l'annulation (1533) de la bulle instituant l'Inquisition au Portugal et le pardon de milliers de crypto-Juifs. Attaqué et laissé pour mort en 1536, accusé de détournement par ses coreligionnaires, il finit par émigrer en Turquie.
