Savant juif italien de la Renaissance né à Mantoue, installé à Ferrare. Il publie en 1573-1575 le « Me'or Enayim » (La Lumière des yeux), première grande œuvre d'historiographie juive critique, croisant Talmud, Philon et sources gréco-latines. Le premier à souligner que certaines données historiques du Talmud contredisent les faits ; l'ouvrage fut d'abord frappé d'interdit rabbinique.
