Réputé pour son humilité (anav), sa tombe au mont des Oliviers est un lieu de pèlerinage.

Membre de la première génération d'artistes du Yishouv (avec Nahum Gutman, Menahem Shemi…), il servit dans la Légion juive (1917-1919). Connu pour ses paysages de « réalisme jérusalémite » et ses illustrations botaniques pour le « Floral Treasury of the Land of Israel » d'Ephraim Hareuveni.

Il fut le mentor de la romancière Chava Rosenfarb dans le ghetto. Déporté à Auschwitz le 28 août 1944 et gazé. Ses deux poèmes, retrouvés dans les ruines du ghetto, furent publiés par la Commission historique juive en 1946.
