Natchez, port fluvial du Mississippi, a accueilli des marchands juifs alsaciens et bavarois dès les années 1820, qui fondèrent la congrégégation B'nai Israel vers 1840. Cette communauté, l'une des plus anciennes du Sud profond, jouait un rôle actif dans le commerce du coton et des marchandises.
