Psychanalyste austro-américain né dans une famille juive de Kolomyia. Il fuit l'Autriche nazie en 1937-38 et s'installe à New York. Théoricien prolifique, il publie environ 25 livres et 273 articles sur le développement de l'enfant, le masochisme psychique, le jeu pathologique et les conduites d'auto-sabotage.
