Incendiary attack during morning prayer
6 déc. 2024·Melbourne, synagogue Adass Israel
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
On 6 December 2024, before dawn, men spread petrol and set fire to the Adass Israel synagogue in Melbourne, in the Ripponlea neighbourhood, while worshippers were gathered there for morning prayer. They managed to get out; one worshipper was injured, and the building along with its Torah scrolls were largely destroyed.
The synagogue belonged to a Hassidic community founded by survivors of the Shoah, and Melbourne is home to one of the highest proportions of survivors outside Israel. The fire was described as a terrorist act by the Australian authorities and led to the creation of a special task force against antisemitism.
