Shooting during a Hanukkah celebration

Bondi Beach, to the east of Sydney, borders a neighborhood that is home to a large part of the Australian Jewish community, largely descended from survivors of the Shoah. On December 14, 2025, on the first evening of Hanukkah, around a thousand people had gathered at the water's edge, in Archer Park, for the public candle-lighting when two men, a father and his son, opened fire on the crowd with rifles. Dozens of participants were wounded. The father was shot by police, the son arrested. The perpetrators declared allegiance to the Islamic State, which claimed the attack. It is the deadliest mass shooting to have occurred in Australia since Port Arthur, and the most serious antisemitic attack in the country's history.
