In July 2006, an armed man forced his way into the offices of the Jewish federation of Greater Seattle by taking a teenage girl hostage at the entrance, then opened fire on the employees present. One woman was killed, several others wounded, including one who was pregnant; the perpetrator surrendered to police after telephoning the emergency services himself.
He declared that he had acted because of the Lebanon war then underway and his anger toward Israel. The attack, carried out against an American communal institution with no connection to that conflict, led Jewish federations across the United States to reassess the security of their premises; it was prosecuted as a hate crime.
