Pendant la première guerre israélo-arabe, une série d'explosions frappe le quartier juif du Caire — la hārat al-yahūd — et des magasins appartenant à des Juifs, dont les grands magasins Cicurel et Oreco. Des maisons s'effondrent sur leurs habitants. La responsabilité reste disputée : groupes nationalistes égyptiens selon les uns, bombes perdues de l'aviation selon la version officielle du moment.

Ces explosions accompagnent une politique d'État : loi sur les biens des « sionistes », séquestres d'entreprises, internements administratifs de plusieurs milliers de personnes dans des camps du désert. La communauté d'Égypte, l'une des plus anciennes et des plus prospères du monde méditerranéen, entre là dans la décennie qui la fera disparaître.
