Des cortèges partis des mosquées et des universités défilent pour l'anniversaire de la Déclaration Balfour, encadrés par les Jeunes-Égyptiens et les Frères musulmans. Au Caire, les manifestants entrent dans le quartier juif, la hārat al-yahūd, incendient la synagogue Ashkénaze, un hôpital et un foyer de vieillards ; à Alexandrie, les boutiques sont pillées.

Les victimes sont juives et non juives, la foule s'en prenant aussi aux commerces grecs et arméniens. L'Égypte comptait alors une communauté ancienne de plusieurs dizaines de milliers de personnes, très mêlée à la vie économique du pays ; les émeutes marquent le moment où la question palestinienne devient chez elle une affaire intérieure.
