The Shoah (1939–1945)
Convoys from Milan to the east
1944·Milan
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
The convoys departing from the underground station in Milan carry eastward the internees gathered at San Vittore then at Bolzano; the platform from which they left will later be dedicated to their memory.
Convoys depart from Milan throughout the first semester, leaving from the underground platform of the central station bound for Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen. The deported individuals had been held at San Vittore or transferred from Fossoli. The Milan platform has been preserved and transformed into a memorial, where the word by which it is now known has been inscribed on a wall. The Milan convoys are those from which the fewest survivors returned.
