The Shoah (1939–1945)

Liquidation of the ghetto of Zhovkva

mars 1943·Zhovkva

Toll
plusieurs milliers de morts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The community of the city with Renaissance fortifications, whose synagogue was considered one of the finest in the country, was shot in Borek wood; families hidden in cellars and underground passages held out there for months.

The liquidation of the enclosed quarter of Zhovkva, a former residence of the Sobieski family endowed with a fortified synagogue, took place in spring in the Borek forest, on the outskirts of the town, where the pits had been dug. The inhabitants were led there in columns over several days. After the war, the site received a commemorative marker, and the synagogue, emptied and damaged, remained standing.
