A former rice mill transformed into a police and transit camp, the only camp in Western Europe equipped with a crematory oven.
The Risiera di San Sabba, a former rice mill on the outskirts of Trieste, is taken over by the German police following the occupation of northern Italy. The city is then detached from the Social Republic and incorporated into a zone administered directly from Berlin.
The building serves both as a transit camp toward Auschwitz for the Jews of the region and as a place of detention and execution for Slovene, Croatian, and Italian resistance fighters. It is the only camp in Western Europe to have been equipped with a crematorium furnace, hastily destroyed at the end of the war.
