Mussolini announces from the Piazza Unità in Trieste the measures against Italian Jews, before a crowd gathered for the occasion. The choice of city is not incidental: Trieste is home to an ancient and prosperous community, rooted in the port and maritime insurance. These are followed by the exclusion from schools, the civil service, and the military, the prohibition of mixed marriages, and the expulsion of foreign Jews who had entered the country after the previous war. The rupture is brutal in a country where emancipation had seemed assured.
