À Sobibór, les détenus du commando de travail savaient, comme à Treblinka, que la fin des convois signifierait la leur. L'arrivée d'un groupe de prisonniers de guerre juifs de l'Armée rouge, parmi lesquels le lieutenant Alexandre Petcherski, donne au comité clandestin animé par Leon Feldhendler l'encadrement militaire qui lui manquait.

Le plan est simple et tient au caractère du camp : attirer les officiers SS un à un dans les ateliers, sous prétexte d'essayer des bottes ou un manteau, et les abattre sans bruit, puis franchir la clôture et le champ de mines à l'appel. Une partie s'exécute ; la fuite tourne à la course sous le feu. Des dizaines d'évadés seulement atteindront la fin de la guerre, dont Petcherski. Les Allemands ferment le camp, en dynamitent les installations et plantent des arbres sur l'emplacement.
