The camp brings together Jewish workers requisitioned for military works in northern Tunisia, near the front line.

The Mateur labor camp brings together Jewish workers conscripted for military works in the north of the country, near the front line. There, trenches are dug, roads are cleared, landing strips are repaired under fire. The men sent to Mateur sleep on site, in makeshift quarters, and return home only at the end of periods set by the occupier. The conditions there were among the harshest of any worksite opened during the occupation.
