After the German occupation of Italy, the Fossoli camp becomes the main transit camp to Auschwitz; Primo Levi passes through it in February 1944.
Fossoli, near Carpi in Emilia, had served as a camp for British prisoners of war. After the German occupation of Italy and the proclamation of the Italian Social Republic, it became the country's principal transit camp to Auschwitz.
The camp was first administered by the Italian authorities, then taken over directly by the German police. Primo Levi was interned there in February of the following year before being deported; he left a description of it in the opening pages of *Si c'est un homme*.
