Warned of the liquidation, the Jews of the town set fire to the ghetto and force the gate; about two thousand people reach the woods, most are hunted down in the following weeks, a few dozen survive.
Tuchyn, in Volhynia, is one of the rare ghettos where the Jewish council itself organizes the uprising. Warned of the liquidation, the inhabitants set fire to the quarter and force through the barriers; entire families flee into the cornfields and toward the forests. Most are recaptured in the following days and shot, but a few dozen survive until liberation.
