Monasterzyska, a market town in eastern Galicia known for its fairs and tobacco factory, was home to a community of merchants and craftsmen settled around the square. Under the occupation, it was subjected to a census, stripped by repeated levies, deprived of all trade, then confined to an enclosed quarter where the Jews of the surrounding district's villages were also brought. The actions followed one after another: selections, shootings in a nearby wood, convoys toward the extermination camp. The Jewish town, several centuries old, ceased to exist within the space of a few months.
