Small town in the Wieprz valley, southeast of Lublin, Krasnystaw was home to an ancient community established around a grain market and a tanners' quarter. The German occupation first imposed forced labor and levies, then gathered the Jews of the town and neighboring villages into an enclosed quarter. In the spring, the so-called resettlement operation emptied this quarter: its inhabitants were taken to the station and transported to the Bełżec death camp, as part of the liquidation of the communities of the Lublin district. A few men held back for labor survived the first convoy; they were dispersed among the camps of the region over the following months. The community of Krasnystaw ceased to exist.
