Liquidation of the Knyszyn ghetto

Knyszyn, a small town in Podlachia north of Białystok, a former royal residence, was home to a Jewish community whose settlement dates back to the sixteenth century and which made up the greater part of the population. Grain merchants and craftsmen kept the market there. After the arrival of German troops, in the summer of the third year of the war, the Jewish population was confined to an enclosed quarter, subjected to forced labor, and deprived of food. The following autumn, the occupier emptied this quarter and led the inhabitants to the Białystok ghetto, from which they were transported to the Treblinka death camp.
