The Shoah (1939–1945)

Liquidation of the Dubrovytsia ghetto

26 août 1942·Dubrovytsia

Toll
plusieurs milliers de morts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The ghetto of the Polesie town is surrounded at dawn; the inhabitants are led in columns to open pits on the edge of the city and shot during the day. A few families hide in the marshes and later join the partisans.

The enclosed ghetto of Dubrovytsia, in Volhynia, is liquidated at the end of summer: the population is led in columns toward pits dug on the outskirts of the town, along the road to Sarny. Local guards recruited by the occupier hold the cordon and pursue those who flee into the nearby marshes. The community, which had lived primarily from the timber trade and the river, disappears in a single day.
