The community of the old town, which Yiddish folklore had made proverbial, is deported by convoys to a nearby death center; the sick and elderly are shot on departure, and the last ghetto workers shot the following year.
Chelm, an ancient city in the Lublin region, sees its Jewish population concentrated in an open quarter and then swept away in successive waves of convoys to a nearby extermination center. The sick and the elderly are shot on the spot during the roundups. A labor camp maintained for a few months longer is in turn liquidated. The city, whose name is attached to an entire cycle of Jewish folk tales, thus loses the community that carried them.
