The Shoah (1939–1945)

Roundup of Bolekhiv

septembre 1942·Bolekhiv

Toll
plusieurs milliers de morts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The roundup of the small town in Eastern Galicia takes place over several days, house by house; those who do not leave in the wagons are shot in the cemetery or in courtyards. The account of these days, reconstructed long afterward by the descendants of a vanished family, made the town known well beyond the region.

Bolekhiv, a small town in eastern Galicia known for its tanneries, was subjected in the autumn to an operation lasting several days: a roundup in the square, executions in the community hall and in the streets, then convoys to a death center. The enclosed quarter was subsequently reduced to a few workshops, which were liquidated the following spring. The detailed testimony of a survivor, collected after the war, has made this town one of the best-documented cases in the province.
