Liquidation of the Bielsk Podlaski ghetto

Bielsk Podlaski, a small town in Podlachia between Białystok and the Bug, had a Jewish community attested since the sixteenth century, which made up more than half of the population and lived by craft work and the timber trade. Occupied by the Soviets and then by the Germans in the summer of the third year of the war, it saw its Jewish population confined to an enclosed quarter, subjected to forced labor and decimated by hunger. The following autumn, this quarter was emptied: its inhabitants were taken to the Białystok ghetto, then transported to the Treblinka death camp.
