Placed under Romanian administration after the invasion, Balta received in its ghetto convoys of deportees from Bessarabie and Bucovine, crowded together with the local Jewish population. The cold, hunger, and typhus carried away a portion of those imprisoned over the course of two winters; an improvised committee opened a canteen and a dispensary there, allowing others to hold on until liberation.
