The ravines — the *balki* of the Russian and Ukrainian south — serve everywhere as execution sites, for the same reason as anti-tank ditches: they dispense with the need to dig. Babi Yar, in Kiev, is the best known of them, but it is merely the largest in a series that runs from Volhynia to the Don.
