On the fifth day of July, the Jews of Wąsosz are murdered by Polish neighbors, beaten with iron bars and axes, a few days after the Germans' arrival.
Wąsosz opens the series of massacres in the Łomża region. These episodes were long suppressed, then established at the beginning of this century by the work of the Institute of National Memory, at the cost of a difficult public debate in Poland — the question being not only that of the facts but that of what a nation can acknowledge about itself.
