The anti-tank ditch became, in southern Ukraine, the ordinary place of execution: it is dug, it is long, it can be filled back in. The use of a Soviet military earthwork for extermination is one of the distinctive features of this region, and it complicated the identification of the sites after the war, as the ditches had been filled in and cultivated over.
