Konin, the chief town of eastern Greater Poland, annexed to the Reich, was home to a Jewish community attested since the Middle Ages, whose eighteenth-century synagogue was one of the city's ornaments. From the autumn of the first year of occupation, a portion of the inhabitants was expelled toward the Generalgouvernement; those who remained were subjected to forced labor and imprisoned. The following autumn, they were led into the neighboring forests or transported to the death center of Chełmno nad Nerem. The community, one of the oldest in the province, disappeared.
