The most populous of the ghettos in the occupied province between the Dniestr and the Bug receives tens of thousands of deportees; hunger and epidemics of the first winter carry off a large part, but the community manages to organize itself and part of the deportees survives until liberation.
Bershad, in Transnistria, held the largest of the ghettos established by the Romanian administration. Tens of thousands of Jews deported from Bessarabia and Bukovina were crammed into the houses of the Jewish quarter; typhus, hunger, and the cold of the first winter took a devastating toll. A clandestine workshop and organized mutual aid nonetheless allowed a portion of the deportees to hold on until liberation.
