Le Farhoud — le mot désigne en arabe irakien la rupture de l'ordre et le pillage — éclata à Bagdad pendant l'interrègne qui suivit l'effondrement du gouvernement pro-allemand de Rachid Ali al-Gaylani et précéda le retour du régent, alors que les troupes britanniques attendaient aux portes de la ville. Des soldats débandés, des policiers et des habitants attaquèrent les Juifs revenant de la synagogue pour Chavouot, puis les quartiers d'al-Karkh et d'al-Rusafa ; le pillage dura jusqu'au lendemain, les maisons furent marquées à l'avance.

Le Farhoud est la césure de l'histoire d'une communauté vieille de deux mille cinq cents ans, qui formait alors le tiers de la population de Bagdad. Il ne provoqua pas le départ immédiat, mais il détruisit la confiance : c'est de là que datent l'essor du mouvement sioniste clandestin et du parti communiste chez les jeunes Juifs irakiens, et la décision, prise une décennie plus tard, de partir presque entièrement.
