After the exodus of the early nineteen-fifties, only a few thousand Jews remained in Iraq, almost all of them in Baghdad. The Six-Day War brought them a new wave of measures.

Telephones were cut off, bank accounts frozen, trade licences revoked; the sale of property was forbidden, movement subjected to authorization, and public sector employment closed to them. Arrests took place, often without stated grounds.

These measures were a prelude to the wave of espionage trials in the years that followed, which would end with public hangings in Tahrir Square in Baghdad, before a crowd summoned for the occasion. The last Jews in the country would leave Iraq clandestinely in the decade that followed.
