Post-war and Arab world (1945–1970)

Series of attacks on places frequented by Jews, from the Dar al-Bayda café to the Masouda Shemtov synagogue

Avril 1950 – janv. 1951·Bagdad

Toll
quelques morts, des dizaines de blessés

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

Between the following spring and winter, as the Jews of Baghdad register by the tens of thousands to leave the country, a series of devices explode in places they frequent: the Dar al-Bayda café, a building in the Jewish quarter, a bookshop, and finally the Masouda Shemtov synagogue, which had been converted into a registration center for those seeking to depart.

The attacks cause deaths and dozens of wounded, and accelerate the registrations. Their attribution has remained the subject of lasting historiographical debate: the Iraqi authorities convicted Zionist militants, while other works implicate Iraqi nationalist groups.

Whatever their origin, these attacks weighed heavily on the decision of an entire community: that of Baghdad emptied out within a matter of months.
