The camp of Neuengamme, initially an annex of Sachsenhausen in the suburbs of Hamburg, becomes autonomous and is covered by a network of labor camps across Northern Germany.
The Neuengamme camp, initially a satellite of Sachsenhausen on the outskirts of Hamburg, becomes an autonomous camp at the start of the war. It is built around a brickworks and the excavation of a canal, two projects of extreme harshness. Jewish prisoners are sent there from other camps; the network of its subcamps will extend across the whole of northern Germany.
