The largest Italian internment camp is opened in Calabria for foreign Jews; the regime remains less harsh than in German camps, a school and synagogue function there, and the camp is liberated before others by Allied advance.
An internment camp is opened at Ferramonti di Tarsia, in Calabria, in a marshy plain on the banks of the Crati. Foreign Jews who had taken refuge in Italy are imprisoned there, followed by Italian Jews and groups from the Balkans. The conditions are harsh due to the climate, malaria, and hunger, yet the internees organize a school, a synagogue, and an orchestra, and the guards frequently look the other way. Ferramonti will be liberated before the German occupier descends that far.
