On the eighth day of September, the great synagogue of Będzin was set on fire along with the adjoining Jewish quarter. Those who attempted to flee the flames were shot.
Będzin, in Upper Silesia, was home to an ancient and numerous community, immediately annexed to the Reich through the incorporation of the region. The burning of the synagogue in the very first days reproduced the gesture of Kristallnacht, but without the fiction of popular anger: it was German units that carried it out, in occupied territory.
