'ghetto benches' imposed on Jewish students in Polish universities

At the start of the academic year in October 1937, the rectors of Polish universities officially authorize "ghetto benches": Jewish students are assigned to the left side of lecture halls, separated from their fellow students. Those who refuse to sit remain standing throughout classes, sometimes for entire semesters; many are assaulted in the corridors, and some are killed in the years that follow.

The measure comes to crown years of student violence and campaigns for a numerus clausus in a Poland that was home to the largest Jewish community in Europe. Professors protest and resign, non-Jewish students stand in solidarity; the Polish university does not emerge unscathed.
